Seniors to receive financial help for health care costsPosted On Thu, July 8, 2010
A second round of rebate checks will be mailed out to qualifying seniors from Medicare.
Last month, seniors who entered the "donut hole" received a check worth $250 to help cover prescription drug expenses. Over 300,000 eligible seniors who have a gap in coverage during the second quarter of this year will be receiving a check as well.
Additional financial help will be extended to seniors in the future under new government initiatives.
"The Affordable Care Act starts to close the donut hole this year, giving much-needed relief to millions of seniors," says U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius. "In 2011, the Affordable Care Act takes an additional step for Medicare beneficiaries in the donut hole by providing them with a 50 percent discount on their brand name medications."
Helping seniors is just one of the goals of the Affordable Care Act. Health care reform also aims to prevent health insurance companies from limiting care that patients need. Health insurance providers won't be able to deny patients coverage based on pre-existing conditions and premium hikes will be monitored.
