Seniors should stay informed about Medicare health insurance marketingPosted On Fri, October 23, 2009
When it comes to health insurance, a state insurance department is hoping seniors are careful regarding people who may try to take them for a ride.
Recently, the California Department of Insurance noted that open enrollment for Medicare Advantage and the Medicare Prescription Drug Program will start in November. As a result, many seniors may encounter people who try to take advantage of them.
California Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner said the most important thing seniors, and their families, can do is to stay informed and contact authorities if they felt as though someone is trying to take advantage of them regarding the two programs.
"As Insurance Commissioner, I want to be sure that California seniors do not become the victims of aggressive or deceptive sales practices which are too common during open enrollment for Medicare Advantage plans and the Medicare Prescription Drug Program," Poizner said.
When dealing with those who market the programs, seniors should make sure they have a license to practice in the state. Furthermore, agents are not allowed to contact seniors unless they have been given permission.
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services notes that seniors who opt for the Medicare Advantage program may want to drop their Medigap policy if they have one. Medigap policies are no longer effective when a person joins the advantage health insurance program.
