Secure structures often mean lower priced home insurance

Posted On Fri, August 7, 2009

One way for consumers to save money on their home insurance policies is to make their homes more secure against intruders, according to an industry organization.

According to the Insurance Information Institute, consumers can get discounts of up to 15 percent for devices like burglar alarms, dead bolt locks and window grates.

The institute notes that many burglars will leave if it takes them longer than five minutes to break into a building, and cautions people against making their home so secure that it's difficult to escape from in the event of a fire or other emergency.

The organization also suggests that homeowners should take a few minutes to examine their home for ways to make it more burglar-proof, while also providing sufficient lighting and secure enough doors and windows to further deter intruders.

Another pointer is to keep valuables out of windows and other high-visibility spots to avoid making the house a tempting target for thieves. Overall, a little prevention can save consumers some considerable headaches, as well as money on home insurance.
