Seat belt compliance saves lives, holds down auto insurance rates

Posted On Mon, September 28, 2009

Drivers around the country are becoming safer and avoiding serious accidents and high auto insurance claims by complying with their state's seatbelt laws.

According to new figures from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration show that 84 percent of drivers are now buckling up behind the wheel.

The government report also cited the success of states that use primary enforcement models for seat belt laws. This allows police to pull over a driver for simply not wearing a seat belt, as opposed to committing some other offense first.

According to the Governors Highway Safety Association, 30 states and a handful of U.S. territories now have primary seatbelt laws, while 19 states have secondary laws. New Hampshire is said to be the only state without a law for adults, although children under age 18 are required to buckle up.

The GHSA website also provides information to drivers about what their state requires when it comes to seat belt compliance, from the age of passengers to the amount of fines involved.
This helps hold down auto insurance rates by avoiding serious traffic accidents that result in more expensive medical treatment. Seat belts also save lives of both drivers and occupants.
