Schools attempting to fight obesity could be aiding eating disorders

Posted On Tue, January 31, 2012

A report from the C.S. Mott Children's Hospital showed that some children may have an increased chance of developing an eating disorder due to their school's anti-obesity programs.

The National Poll on Children's Health found that more than 80 percent of parents who have children between the ages of six and 14 noted their child's school had at least one program to fight childhood obesity. However, 7 percent of parents said that one of these programs made the child feel bad about what they were eating.

"The issue of childhood obesity is a serious problem. In order to intervene in what seems like an epidemic of childhood obesity, everyone needs to be involved," said David Rosen, clinical professor of Pediatrics, Internal Medicine, and Psychiatry at the University of Michigan Medical School.

If a parent is concerned about their child's eating habits, it maybe a smart plan to ask a doctor for advice. If they lack sufficient health insurance, it may be a good idea to compare health insurance quotes to find something that is right for their family.
