Sandy victims take on cold, mold, a fresh batch of issues

Posted On Tue, December 4, 2012

Although the floodwaters of Hurricane Sandy have long since subsided, homeowners who saw significant damage to their property are still dealing with the after-effects of the storm.

According to Insurance Journal, property owners whose homes were in Sandy's wake are now seeing destructive mold growing in the parts of their homes that were flooded. Additionally, since many victims are still without power, their heating systems have ceased to function, so their once-welcoming homes are cold and musty.

City officials note that approximately 12,000 New York City residents are trying to survive in flood-damaged homes without heat, despite the city's warning that doing so could pose serious health risks.

Many of the residents who refuse to leave their homes were those who could not afford flood insurance rates, and are thus left to make repairs out-of-pocket. Since that is financially impossible for many, their homes remain in a dangerously dilapidated state.
