Safe Kids study finds Halloween a dangerous time on the road

Posted On Fri, October 28, 2011

A recent study from Safe Kids Worldwide found that due to the Halloween night being dangerous for drivers and pedestrians, it is vital people exercise extra caution on that night.

Close to double the amount of children are killed on the road during Halloween festivities when compared to other days of the year.

"Given children's limited attention spans, repeated and consistent messages about safe behaviors are key to preventing injuries," says Kate Carr, president and chief executive officer of Safe Kids Worldwide. "It is alarming to hear that children ages five years and younger are trick-or-treating without adult supervision"

Specifically, it is important for drivers to drive slowly around residential areas, as children tend to move unpredictably, the study noted. In addition, children wearing costumes may have a smaller vision range, so it is possible that they won't see a vehicle coming.

In order to protect against the possibility of an accident, it may be important for consumers to ensure their auto insurance policy is wide-ranging enough to cover collisions with pedestrians. By comparing car insurance quotes, a driver may find the exact program they are looking for.
