Rural children struggle to receive proper healthcare benefits

Posted On Mon, October 31, 2011

A recent report from the Health Resources and Services Administration showed that many children who live in more rural parts of the United States have a more difficult time being treated and having sufficient health insurance coverage.

The National Survey of Children's Health found that those living in rural areas are more prone to conditions such as obesity, asthma and other chronic illnesses. In addition, they also are more likely to be insured under Medicaid or the Children's Health Insurance Program. Those who live in urban areas are more likely to be insured by a private healthcare plan.

"This national survey demonstrates how children in rural areas face particular health risks," said Mary Wakefield, administrator for HRSA. "Using the information provided by parents about their children will give public health officials a more complete picture for how to improve these children's health outcomes."

Consumers who live in rural areas and are concerned about the welfare of their children may be inclined to compare health insurance rates, as they could find something that is both inexpensive and inclusive.
