Road improvements could benefit auto insurance customers

Posted On Tue, August 11, 2009

Fewer accidents often means lower auto insurance rates for drivers, which is why ongoing government efforts to improve the nation's roads will be good for their safety as well as their wallets.

Road upgrades have been underway throughout the summer in all 50 states with help from the $800 billion stimulus bill that was signed by President Obama earlier this year.

According to the Transportation Department, 6,000 highway projects nationwide have now been funded under the stimulus bill, following the beginning of work on a road widening project in the Phoenix area.

"This important project will improve safety and reduce traffic in and around Phoenix. It will also, like the thousands that came before it, put people back to work," said Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood, calling this particular project "a major milestone."

The road project in Phoenix is said to benefit a road that serves 45,000 vehicles each day and which will widen it from four lanes to six at a cost of $44.5 million. Other improvements will include turn lanes at intersections and improved medians, which should help cut down on accidents and in turn, help area drivers maintain reasonable auto insurance rates.
