Rice eaters show health benefitsPosted On Tue, December 14, 2010
A serving of rice may do more than fill a person up, it may also help improve overall health. Research published in Nutrition Today highlights the benefits of the grain.
According to an analysis of data derived from 1999-2004 National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys, those who consume rice are a third less likely to have high blood pressure and 25 percent less likely to have a large abdomen. Those with a large waist are often overweight and at a higher risk of developing diabetes and other conditions that may result in higher life insurance premiums.
Julie Upton, the study author, says rice makes a good addition to people's diets.
"This study shows that eating rice can improve overall diet and reduce risk for the major conditions that afflict more than half of all Americans, heart disease and type 2 diabetes," says Upton. "Rice is a practical solution to help consumers meet dietary guidance to eat more plant-based foods."
While eating rice may have health benefits, it doesn't mean people can avoid fruits and vegetables. A healthy diet is a balanced one which has appropriate portions from each major food group.
