Residents reminded to check coverage before winter hitsPosted On Mon, December 20, 2010
Wintry weather conditions mean many homeowners may experience damage to their residences. The Ohio Department of Insurance says people can save money by planning ahead.
Following a few safety precautions can help people avoid having to take advantage of their home insurance. Simple steps, such as cleaning out gutters and ensuring a dryer vent isn't blocked, are good starts.
If a claim does need to be made, the department advises people to call their insurer as soon as possible. Photographing and making notation of any damage is also a good idea.
Insurance Director Mary Jo Hudson says there will a good chance of multiple storms hitting the state.
"Ohioans know that we will more than likely experience several winter storms this season," says Hudson. "It's not too late to limit and potentially avoid any damage to your home and/or automobile. The best way to do that is to be prepared ahead of time."
Insurance isn't just for those who own a home. Apartment dwellers can also benefit from having renter's insurance. The coverage can help those who suffer personal property damage as a result of a storm or other incident.
