Residents reminded of the dangers space heaters posePosted On Fri, November 12, 2010
Chilly weather can bring on the need for people to crank up their heat. The first cold snap of the season can feel particularly jarring to those who prefer a warmer climate.
The Mississippi Insurance Department is reminding homeowners of the dangers that can arise when using space heaters. The department urges residents to ensure clothing, drapes and other flammable items are kept away from heating units.
Commissioner of Insurance and State Fire Marshal Mike Chaney says following proper safety protocol can be the difference between life and death.
"The State Fire Marshal's Office wants people to take extreme care when choosing a heating source during this weekend's cold weather," says Chaney. "Too many fires and fire deaths are caused by faulty heating equipment or people using ill-advised methods to stay warm."
In addition to space heaters, people can stay warm by adding another layer of clothing or moving around their house for a few minutes.
Even though a home insurance policy can help one cover costs for damaged items in the event of a fire, the best thing to do is prevent one from happening in the first place.
