Research says banning toys won't stop obesity trend

Efforts are underway to help combat the country's childhood obesity epidemic. Fingers have been pointed at a variety of sources, including fast-food restaurants. Unhealthy children can grow up to have a variety of medical conditions that can strain the healthcare system and subsequently result in more expensive life insurance rates.

Earlier this month, regulators in San Francisco banned McDonald's from giving their famous toys away in Happy Meals because the food is deemed too unhealthy for youngsters.

The Restaurant Selection Study from CFI Group, which measures customer satisfaction, found that while almost a third of families who ate at McDonald's did so at a child's request, a toy was a motivating factor less than 10 percent of the time.

"McDonald's is more than the cheap plastic toy," says CFI Group North American business development executive Michael Drago. "From the food and the familiar cast of friendly characters to the playground, McDonald's is a place kids like to go."

It's never a good idea to solely eat just one type of food or consume a diet from just one restaurant. A diet that limits sweets, fats and oils, and is more plentiful of grains, fruits and vegetables is recommended by medical professionals.
