Report: Driver distractions curbed by voice-based technologyPosted On Fri, January 27, 2012
Driver assistance company Agero recently released a report showing that voice-based texting programs could actually cut down distracted driving.
The technology reduces the distraction a person has from glancing at their phones significantly, and it made sure that the vehicle operator's eyes were on the road more than they would be before. Overall, the driver's awareness of their surroundings was higher.
"While we can't conclude at this point that voice interfaces eliminate driver distraction, the data indicates that voice can certainly reduce the risk," said Tom Schalk, vice president of voice technologies for Agero. "With the improvements in acoustically modeling the vehicle cockpit, extending language models, voice interface metrics, and simplified dialogue design, we can reduce the risk even more."
While consumers may benefit from these programs, they may not be the norm on the road for a significant period of time. Due to other motorists still practicing unsafe driving habits, it could be wise to make sure that a person's auto insurance covers sufficiently. Comparing auto insurance quotes may help do this.
