Repair scams widespread in storm-stricken areasPosted On Wed, March 21, 2012
With natural disasters already affecting homeowners across the country in 2012, a report from the National Insurance Crime Bureau warned consumers to keep an eye out for scammers who may offer to fix a home.
When looking for repairs, it is important to always look for multiple estimates, the report said. Furthermore, make sure every detail of the project is in writing before hiring the person. This includes costs, payments, times and anything else important. Also, don't allow a contractor to pressure anyone, and don't sign anything that has blank spaces that can be filled in later.
The report added that if a person arrives at the home without request, it may be a good idea to reject them. If a person has damage to their home due to a storm, it is vital to contact the insurance company before doing anything.
Those who are unsure if their home insurance is sufficient may want to check other options available. There are many to choose from, and a person may find a large amount of options online by looking for home insurance quotes.
