Repair contractors can be scammersPosted On Tue, March 20, 2012
A report from the Property Casualty Insurers Association of America noted that consumers who dealt with damage due to the recent tornado outbreak may be at risk of being taken advantage of by scam artists posing as contractors.
The firm noted that homeowners should go out of their way to check out references of contractors. In addition, friends and neighbors may have a go-to contractor option, or could have good advice on the situation. It is important to take note of any contractor who seems like they are rushing to get a deal done. This is even more of a red flag if the damages are not an emergency to get repaired.
"As the rebuilding process gets underway, unlicensed contractors and scam artists may be looking to cash in on your misfortune," said Christopher Hackett, PCI’s director of personal lines policy. "Homeowners will save themselves a lot of time, money and frustration by taking the time to check the credentials of the businesses and individuals that they hire to repair your property."
Consumers who own a home shouldn't pay too much for their insurance, as uncovered repairs can be expensive. Examining various home insurance rates may help a person find a plan that is affordable.
