Renters and home insurance can be extra valuable in the winterPosted On Mon, December 27, 2010
Planning ahead can help prevent headaches and financial woes down the road. Maine Insurance Superintendent Mila Kofman is urging residents to to prepare for inclement weather with renters and home insurance.
In a statement, Kofman went over some weather-related incidents that can occur. Among the potential hazards are fallen trees and structure damage caused by heavy ice and snow.
"This is the time of year to make sure your home or apartment is protected from storms and other potential winter hazards," says Kofman. "It can be heart-breaking to learn too late that your homeowners or renter policy doesn't cover a particular loss."
Kofman notes that some people think that a home insurance policy will cover damage from a flood, however there are separate policies for such disasters.
Many people fall victim to fires and damage from pipes bursting in their apartment or house. In such circumstances, insurance policies can be helpful in replacing damaged items. Policies also protect in the event of theft. Even families that reside in safe neighborhoods and have security systems can become the target of criminals.
