Reform spurs consumers to spend more time reviewing healthcare benefits, survey finds

It's hard to turn on the news or open the newspaper without hearing about healthcare reform. While the constant dialog may seem redundant, a survey shows good has come from it.

A United Healthcare survey of more than 1,000 adults found that almost two-thirds of respondents say the ongoing national discussion on healthcare has made them more closely review their own health insurance benefits. In the past, respondents said they spent less than an hour reviewing their options. With fall being open enrollment for many companies, consumers would be wise to learn about their benefit offerings.

United Healthcare's chief growth officer Austin Pittman says people can make better decisions if they are properly informed.

"Just as we encourage people to closely examine their health benefits and ask questions, it's also important that employers and insurers communicate clearly about the different options that are available," says Pittman.

Consumers should thoroughly review any health insurance information they receive from their employer. There are also several websites consumers can get information from, including one recently unveiled by the government, which provides detailed information and allows people to compare plan options.
