Record number of tornadoes touch down in 24-hour period

Posted On Wed, May 4, 2011

Analysis from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has found that a record number of twisters touched down in a 24-hour period last month.

Last month, much of the Midwest and South was hammered with tornado activity and a new report has found that approximately 226 twisters are believed to have affected the regions between April 27 and April 28. Eyewitness reports have the count higher at 226.

The loss of life was also significant in that 24-hour period, as the NOAA reports that 304 lives were lost, 65 in the Tuscaloosa-Birmingham, Alabama, area alone. The 65 fatalities is the highest number of deaths resulting from a single tornado since May 25, 1955, when 80 people perished after a twister hit southern Kansas, according to the source.

Jane Lubchenco, an administrator with the NOAA, recently observed some of the affected areas with a forensic meteorology team. She called the damage "heartbreaking" and survivor's stories both "heroic" and "tragic."

Home insurance companies are dealing with thousands of claims from policyholders whose properties have been demolished. The sheer volume of claims may delay response time from these insurers.
