Record-breaking month for insurance losses in KansasPosted On Wed, June 1, 2011
According to the Kansas Insurance Department, insured property losses in the month of April has set a new record for the state.
After assessing 66,000 claims submitted by residents whose homes were damaged, insurance commissioner Sandy Praeger said home insurance companies will sustain losses of approximately $502 million. The previous one-month record was $337 million, which was set in June 2008.
"The wind and hailstorms of April 3 and April 8 accounted for the majority of the claims reported for the property damage losses,” said Praeger. "The April 3 storms were concentrated in northeast Kansas, while the Wichita area and south central parts of the state suffered wind and hail damage during the April 8 weather events.”
Praeger went on to say that the high dollar amount is likely due to higher costs for fixing homes, both in labor and material.
More people could be submitting home insurance claims if storm activity does not decline, as tornado season lasts between April and July, the peak months being May and June.
