These claims, which are put up for review by insurance companies, are considered possibly fraudulent. The categories that the report examines are workers' compensation, vehicle, commercial, casualty, property and other miscellaneous claims.
During the first half of 2011, nearly 49,000 questionable claims were reported, the NICB noted. This was more than 18 percent higher than the first part of 2009, which had a figure of 41,309. For the first six months of 2010, a total of 46,766 claims were reported to the bureau.
Medical referrals as well as hail damage were the two highest types of claims to be reported to the bureau, the release noted. Workers' compensation had two of its referral reasons make up a near 450 percent. These were "duplicate billing" and "inflated medical billing."
