Questionable injury claims spike in 2011

Posted On Tue, June 5, 2012

The National Insurance Crime Bureau's latest report showed that slip-and-fall claims that were considered possibly fraudulent rose 12 percent during 2011.

These types of claims include avoidable situations where a person feigns injury, and collects the insurance money, according to the report. In 2011, there was a total of 2,168 referrals, which was much higher than 2010's figure of 1,944.

California was the state with the most questionable claims, as 667 were recorded from 2010 to 2011, the report noted. In addition, New York came in second with 280, while Texas, Illinois and Florida rounded out the top five. New York City had the most claims when comparing metro areas, with a total of 134. Los Angeles came in second with 127, while Philadelphia was third with 99.

Rises in questionable claims can increase health insurance rates for everyone, even if they have never claimed anything before. Due to this, if a person notices that their insurance is getting more expensive, it could benefit them to compare health insurance quotes to find a better deal.
