Questionable claims rise during 2011Posted On Tue, March 6, 2012
Insurance claims which can be considered questionable increased during 2011, according to a report from the National Insurance Crime Bureau.
The 2011 questionable claims referral reason analysis showed that there were 100,450 questionable claims during the year. This was a record level, and higher than both 2010 and 2011, which were 84,407 and 91,797, respectively. The largest claim during 2011 was faked or exaggerated injury, which registered more than 17,000 claims.
While many types of these claims increased, questionable auto glass claims declined 1,365 to 817 in 2011 when compared to the previous year.
"We are encouraged by the trend in auto glass questionable claims," said Joe Wehrle, NICB president and chief executive officer. "Our efforts to publicize this problem and to make insurers, law enforcement and the American public more aware of the potential fraud in the auto glass repair arena is hopefully having an impact."
Consumers who live in areas with significant amounts of insurance fraud occurring could be at risk of having their auto insurance rates jump through no fault of their own.
