Protect your home from an earthquake with adequate insurance policiesPosted On Mon, January 18, 2010
Given the devastation in Haiti following the recent earthquakes that produced casualties in the hundreds of thousands while leaving countless more without a home, many consumers are rethinking how prudent it may be to add earthquake coverage to one’s home insurance plan.
In Oregon, January 26 will mark the 310th anniversary of the Cascadia Subduction Earthquake, which measured 9.0 and damaged areas from Northern California to Southern British California.
However, according to Central Oregon NBC affiliate KTVZ, a recent survey found that only 20 percent of Oregonians have the proper home insurance coverage to protect themselves from an earthquake.
"Consumers may want to think about their ability to rebuild if their house is destroyed in an earthquake," said Cory Streisinger, director of the Department of Consumer and Business Services, KTVZ reported. "Insurance should be weighed as part of other earthquake preparations."
According to the U.S. Geological Survey 1,783 deaths were recorded worldwide due to earthquake activity in 2009. The strongest earthquake had a magnitude 8.1 on September 29 in the American Samoa. The largest earthquake to hit the U.S. measured a 6.5 and occurred on October 13 in the Aleutian Islands in Alaska.
