Property crimes fell in 2010Posted On Wed, May 25, 2011
New figures released by the Federal Bureau of Investigation reveal that 2010 was a positive year as far as the rate of propertry crimes are concerned, as there were fewer of them nationwide.
According to the FBI's Preliminary Annual Uniform Crime Report, there was a 3 percent decline in property crimes in 2010 compared to 2009.
For example, motor vehicle theft dropped approximately 10 percent, larceny declined 2.3 percent and the rate of burglaries diminished by just under 1.5 percent. Arson - which is technically different from property crime but often classified under the same category - was also down, falling 15 percent nationwide.
While the rate of property crime was down all across the country, some sections of the country saw more significant declines than others. Crimes in the South declined the most at 3.8 percent, while the drop-off in the Northeast was slight, at 0.5 percent. The Northeast was the only region where the rate of burglary increased, rising 3.5 percent.
Home insurance policies provide coverage for policyholders whose properties have been robbed or set ablaze. For instance, theft is usually part of a basic homeowner policy.
