Proper levels of vitamin D, calcium needed for optimal healthPosted On Tue, December 7, 2010
It can be difficult for people to gauge how much of a certain vitamin or nutrient they need to be healthy. A new study from the Institute of Medicine has established recommendations for calcium and vitamin D levels.
Most adults need up to 600 international units of vitamin D per day, with those over 71 requiring 800 IUs, according to the report. Calcium intake of 1,000 milligrams a day is sufficient for most adults.
Penn State University committee chair Catharine Ross says the researchers carefully reviewed a body of research to reach such recommendations.
"We scrutinized the evidence, looking for indications of beneficial effects at all levels of intake," said Ross. "Amounts higher than those specified in this report are not necessary to maintain bone health."
The National Institutes of Health says salmon, cheese and beef liver are a few products that naturally have the vitamin. It's also important for people to get some sun exposure so that the skin can make the nutriment.
Those who ensure their diets include proper nutrient and vitamin levels have a greater chance of living better and receiving lower life insurance premiums.
