President calls for 1 million electric cars by 2015Posted On Thu, January 27, 2011
In Tuesday's State of the Union Address, President Obama made a declaration that likely piqued the attention of motorists around the country.
"With more research and incentives, we can break our dependence on oil with biofuels, and become the first country to have a million electric vehicles on the road by 2015," said President Obama.
That statement also caught two Michigan democrats' attention, according to the Washington Post, as they want to procure billions of dollars in tax incentives to encourage people to buy them.
According to the paper, if Senator Carl Levin and Representative Sander Levin are successful, consumers would be able to take advantage of $7,500 in tax incentives that would go toward the purchase of an electric vehicle.
The lawmakers' hope is more people will buy electric cars, putting fewer carbon emissions into the atmosphere. But this could be good news for people who are feeling financially strapped due to rising gas prices and car insurance premiums. More electric cars being used means more studies can be done regarding their safety. And motorists who drive vehicles proven to be safe tend to have lower auto insurance rates.
