Preparing for wildfires important in some areasPosted On Fri, July 6, 2012
Allstate recently warned homeowners who live in heavily wooded and dry areas to keep in mind that wildfire risks are very real and these people should take proper precautions to help cut the chances of a home burning.
Due to the significant dry spell in the Western United States, fires have developed in multiple states, including Utah, New Mexico and Colorado, the insurance company explained. It is very important to look to cut down on brush that is within 30 feet of the home. If there is a buffer, this can save the house, in many cases.
It is necessary to get rid of all piles of wood, the report said. By moving it as far away from the home as possible, a homeowner could help protect their property. In addition, avoiding building decks and other wood-based items can help cut down fuel sources for the wildfire. Cutting back all trees and other large plants in the area can aid in this, as well.
Keeping up with the yard's grass levels can be a great idea, and clearing out any extra branches that have fallen into the yard is an important task, the report added. Also, make sure that the sprinkler system is operational and is used sufficiently. Any flammable items such as propane for grills should be put away in case of a large fire.
Not only should a family go out of their way to make sure their home is physically protected, but they also may want to ensure their home insurance coverage is up-to-date. However, if they do not have a strong plan, looking for home insurance quotes and comparing the items may be the best way to find something that works for everyone.
