Preparing for a home fire can save livesPosted On Wed, September 29, 2010
A family's home is suppose to be a place where everyone feels safe. However, every year a number of people die in home fires. October 2, National Family Fire Drill Day, is the perfect time for families to discuss a potentially life-threatening situation.
No one likes to think about the potential of their home being engulfed in flames, but it's important for families to create a plan should a blaze begin in the house.
Liberty Mutual Insurance property risk field manager Tom Harned notes that a home fire takes lives every day.
"With National Family Fire Drill Day, Liberty Mutual is putting a stake in the ground by educating families and motivating them to talk about, create and execute an emergency home exit strategy to help prepare for the unthinkable."
In addition to creating a fire escape plan, families should install smoke detectors on every floor and outside of every bedroom. It may be a wise investment to purchase escape ladders for those living in homes with multiple floors. Furthermore, people may also want to consider purchasing homeowners insurance to replace ruined possessions and life insurance should the unthinkable happen.
