Prepare for snowy weatherPosted On Mon, December 10, 2012
Many Americans are beginning their preparations for a potentially snowy winter - including protecting and adequately insuring their homes.
In 2011, the U.S. recorded $2 billion in insured losses resulting from winter storms, according to Munich Re. In order to prevent serious damage, homeowners across the country should take the time to prepare their homes for the onset of potentially damaging weather.
Although most standard homeowners insurance policies will cover the damage to a home that a severe winter storm can cause, there are some cases when a property owner's lack of preparation can lead to costs that go beyond monthly insurance rates.
For instance, winter storms can often cause roof damage. However, the damage to one policyholder's roof can result in a very different payout from another's depending on several factors. If one homeowner recently renovated and outfitted their roof with extra protections, for example, they are likely to get a higher payout. Additionally, if one individual took photos of the damage soon after it happened, that will help them in their insurance case.
