Pool accidents could leave property owners at riskPosted On Sun, July 29, 2012
As the summer heats up, many will go to local pools in order to cool off from the blistering rays of the sun. However, some have called attention recently to the importance of safety for those taking a dip.
In an effort to combat these risks, many pools in the United States will be taking part in the government's national Pool Safety initiative. Those in the insurance field said that the event was a good time for many property owners to think about whether they had proper coverage in the event that anything goes wrong.
In a statement, Insurance Information Institute (I.I.I.) senior vice president and consumer spokesman Jeanne M. Salvatore said that taking the right measures before an accident occurs is critical.
"You can be sued if someone drowns or is injured in your pool even if they did not have your permission to be there," said Salvatore. "So it's important to have the proper locks and safety equipment and to have appropriate liability insurance."
The risks are especially high for young people. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more children between the ages of 1-4 die than from a drowning accident than any other cause. Property owners can reduce liability by purchasing coverage after comparing insurance quotes.
