Poll: Many older people don't know how to save on Medicare

Posted On Wed, September 21, 2011

A recent poll completed for the National Council on Aging by GfK Roper and UnitedHealthCare found that many of those eligible for Medicare lack the knowledge to properly tackle the issue.

More than 45 percent of those polled do not look at multiple health insurance options when picking their plan, the poll noted. Approximately 40 percent of those people didn't think they could save money, while another 35 percent were confused with Medicare as a whole. More than 15 percent didn't understand the Medicare process or the rules attached to it. Close to 10 percent rated their knowledge of Medicare as "good" or "excellent."

"Medicare plans change every year, as do your health needs," added Nora Dowd Eisenhower, vice president for the Benefits Access Group and director of NCOA's National Center for Benefits Outreach and Enrollment. "Older adults should explore their options each year, and they need to know that help is available should they need it, to assist them in making the right choices."

It may be smart to learn more about health insurance in general before comparing quotes, so that a person will be better prepared to make an informed decision.
