Poll: Consumers confused about fuel-efficient vehicles

Posted On Thu, July 14, 2011

Confusion about fuel-efficient vehicles appears to be the primary factor getting in the way of more consumers buying them, a new survey indicates.

According to a poll conducted by Opinion Research Corporation, car buyers are expressing uncertainty about hybrid vehicles and how they differ from standard vehicles, perhaps leading some to steer clear of purchasing gas-sipping automobiles.

Alex Molinaroli, president of Power Solutions for Johnson Controls, which funded the study, said the price at the pump isn't enough to encourage buying.

"It's clear that consumers are confused about their options for more fuel-efficient vehicles, despite their desire to save on fuel costs," said Molinaroli. "These findings indicate U.S. drivers need to have a better understanding of the offerings available to them now as well as options that will become available in the U.S. market."

Among the findings, 45 percent of respondents said fuel-efficient vehicles had too few options and 39 percent were oblivious to hybrid technologies.

For those who are well versed with fuel-efficient vehicles, they may want to put off purchasing one, as a recent report from Kelley Blue Book suggests values will fall by 15 percent later this year. Car buyers may be able to get a discount on auto insurance rates by that time as well.
