Police officers' jobs increasingly dangerous

Posted On Thu, December 30, 2010

Law enforcement officials play a crucial role in society, saving lives and protecting potential victims.

The hard work and efforts of police officers comes with a high price. Data from the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund says 160 officers died while on duty within the past year.

The fatalities are a result of a combination of shootings, work-related illness and traffic-related accidents. NLEOMF data reveals police officer deaths were highest in Texas and California in comparison to the rest of the nation.

Concerns of Police Survivors national president Linda Moon Gregory says the increase in work-related fatalities is a disappointment.

"In 2009 the number was lower than in previous years, and we were hopeful that we were seeing a positive trend; however, that has not been the case," says Gregory. "Our number of family survivors and affected co-workers unfortunately has also increased."

Individuals who work in a dangerous occupation should have life insurance. The coverage can be crucial to a family's financial well-being should a sudden fatality occur. Given the increase in line-of-duty fatalities as of late, not purchasing coverage could be a major mistake.
