Plans underway to raise awareness and treatment efforts for lung disease in CaliforniaPosted On Thu, November 18, 2010
Smoking and tobacco use has been linked to a variety of major health problems and increased life insurance premiums. One such medical condition is Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease.
The California COPD Coalition and the California chapter of the American Lung Association are trying to create a plan to reduce the number of people in the state being diagnosed with the condition.
The term COPD is used by physicians to describe chronic bronchitis and emphysema. Both conditions are frequently present in patients. Most people who have the condition are smokers, but those who are exposed to pollution and have a family history of breathing problems are also at a higher risk for developing the disease.
Los Angeles Biomedical Research Institute professor of medicine Dr. Richard Casaburi says a plan will help doctors better treat patients.
"More needs to be done to help people with COPD live healthier lives and to prevent new cases of this serious lung disease," says Casaburi. "The Strategic Plan provides important steps for physicians, healthcare providers and policymakers to take in the fight against COPD."
People who experience problems breathing should see their doctor right away to have tests performed.
