Phone technology may actually help prevent accidentsPosted On Thu, July 8, 2010
Talking on the phone and texting while driving have become dangerous activities too many people engage in.
Almost 6,000 people lost their lives in 2008 because they were involved in an accident with a distracted driver, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
There are devices that can help prevent people from getting behind the wheel and using their cell phone at the same time.
A smartphone application called ZoomSafer puts the phone in "safe drive mode" whenever the driver turns on their in-vehicle Bluetooth device.
"In January, we launched the first version of our safe driving software, utilizing the phone's internal GPS to automatically detect speed and determine if the user was driving, says ZoomSafer Founder and CEO Matt Howard. "After extensive development and testing, we're excited to offer a new version of our ZoomSafer app that uses Bluetooth technology to determine when the user is driving, thus keeping people safer on the road with zero incremental drain on their mobile phone batteries."
Drivers who remain safe on the road and don't get into accidents are likely to get better rates on their auto insurance.
