Pharmacists' knowledge is being put to the test

Posted On Tue, August 31, 2010

People stopping into their local drugstore with their health insurance card in hand are frequently doing more than simply picking up a prescription medication. However, an international survey reveals many pharmacists feel they are expected to provide advice along with other services.

Furthermore, the study reveals nearly 80 percent of pharmacists who provide such insight feel they are not being fairly compensated for doing so.

Despite the fact that many pharmacists feel as though they don't get paid fairly for all of their services, more than 90 percent of those surveyed report feeling they are a key component to making patients healthier.

While pharmacists can provide a wealth of information, it's important for consumers to remember they don't share the same depth of knowledge as a physician.

"We also see an education and income gap that will need to be closed to ensure the pressure on current pharmacists isn't too great, and so that we can continue to attract the best and brightest to the profession in the future," says International Pharmaceutical Federation CEO Ton Hoek.

It's always best for individuals to seek appropriate healthcare advice from a trained professional. Given that many doctors are strapped for time, some patients may feel an increased urge to seek guidance from others, such as pharmacists. ADNFCR-2297-ID-19933144-ADNFCR
