Percentage of adult smokers stays about the same

Posted On Thu, November 12, 2009

The number of Americans that smoke remains steady according to a recent report from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

According to the CDC, smoking is the leading cause of preventable death in the country. It may also lead to higher health insurance, as health care costs related to smoking amount to $96 billion each year.

According to the CDC's most recent 2008 survey, 20.6 percent of American adults said they are smokers, compared to the 20.9 percent who said the same in a 2004 survey. CDC director Thomas R. Frieden said that more efforts must be made to discourage people from smoking, including increasing the price of tobacco.

"If every State had smoking rates similar to places which have implemented effective programs, there would be at least 10 million fewer smokers in the U.S., and millions of heart attacks, cancers, strokes, and deaths would be prevented," Frieden said.

Of course, quitting smoking is not the easiest task. However, there are numerous incentives for people to do, which they can use as motivation to try and overcome the habit. For example, quitting can save money through not buying cigarettes and the potential for better health insurance costs.
