People more likely to seek mental health care when insuredPosted On Wed, July 28, 2010
Having health insurance coverage plays a large role in people getting the mental health care that they need.
Researchers at the UCLA Center for Health Policy Research found that adults who have a health insurance plan were nearly twice as likely to receive mental health care within the past year compared to those without coverage.
A recent survey indicates that having access to such services is very important for a large number of people. Almost one in five Californians said that they needed mental health services, according to the survey. Additionally, one in 25 reported symptoms indicated serious psychological distress.
The research team cites economic conditions as contributing to many people feeling stressed and in need of mental health services.
"The recession has created even more stress for people," said research author David Grant. The study "is probably an underestimate of the true level of mental health need in California right now."
People who don't receive mental health care when they need it may find that their symptoms get worse with time. Some conditions can be treated through dialog with a therapist, while other conditions may require medication.
