Party hosts need home insurancePosted On Tue, December 21, 2010
Those who are planning on throwing a party should do more than make sure they have enough food and drinks to go around. The Pennsylvania Department of Insurance says hosts should also check their home insurance policies.
The department says claims rise every year around the holiday season. Many people may not be aware that a host could be held responsible if a guest becomes involved in a fatal accident involving alcohol served at their social gathering.
Acting insurance commissioner Robert Pratter says if a party is catered, hosts should ensure the company has adequate coverage. There are also other steps hosts need to take to ensure their party goes off without a hitch.
"You can protect your guests from accidents by keeping your sidewalk and driveway free of ice and snow, and making sure your home is well-lit and in good repair," says Pratter. "You can also consider additional liability coverage on your insurance policy, even if it's just temporary coverage for the holiday season."
There are different types of home insurance policies people can get. It's important to discuss all options with an agent beforehand to ensure one is getting the coverage they need.
