Parents urged to discuss safety with teen drivers

Posted On Thu, August 6, 2009

Parents of teenage drivers have enough safety issues to worry about, which is why a leading insurance industry group is offering some advice on how to focus on the importance of safe driving.

The Insurance Information Institute reported that during the summer vacation months, teenagers spend an average of 44 percent more time on the road each week. The group noted that motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for people between ages 15 and 20.

"Immaturity and lack of driving experience are the two main factors leading to the high crash rates among teens," said the institute's vice president, Loretta Worters.

There are various ways parents can promote safe driving, such as making sure the teenager has a safe car and has completed a driver education course and a safe driver program.

It is also important for parents to speak to teenagers about the danger of driving under the influence and of distracted driving. Finally, the institute points out parents need to be good role models if they want their teens to behave safely on the road.

Auto insurance costs are generally higher for teenage drivers, but parents can ensure that costs are kept under control by educating them properly on ways to avoid accidents and other dangers.
