Parents of college students advised to check health insurance policiesPosted On Fri, August 21, 2009
A large insurance website is advising parents to check up on their health insurance policies if they have college-age children heading back to school this fall.
While parents are generally advised to review all insurance coverage, including cars and life policies, to make sure their family's financial needs are provided for, health insurance can be especially important in light of rising treatment costs and overall safety.
Some of the tips offered by the website include checking whether a student must be enrolled full-time in order to remain enrolled, and to be aware of any age cutoff regulations. Those with HMOs may find that their plan does not necessarily cover doctors if a student is at a college far from home.
Other things for parents to check on are whether visits to a college health center are covered under current health insurance policies, and whether there are any restrictions regarding coverage during school vacation and pre-existing conditions.
By staying on top of their health insurance needs and paying close attention to policies, parents can do much to maintain peace of mind during an important time of life.
