Parents and schools should help teach kids about oral health

Posted On Wed, September 8, 2010

Children learn a lot while they are in school. A large number of Hispanic parents believe their children should learn more than just math and science in the classroom. Over 70 percent of Hispanic parents surveyed believed schools should also teach children about oral health.

However, the survey of more than 1,140 U.S. parents commissioned by Oral Health America reveals less than 40 percent of children say they learned about dental health in school last year.

Hispanic Dental Association executive director Yoland Bonta says both parents and schools should share the responsibility of teaching children how to take care of their teeth.

"Parents should commit to spending just two minutes twice a day with younger children to make sure they are not only brushing and flossing their teeth, but doing it right," says Bonta. "Schools can help by integrating mouth health into health and science classes at all grade levels."

Many people have health insurance and use their plans by visiting the doctors for regular checkups. People should take similar precautions with their teeth as oral care is part of one's overall health.ADNFCR-2297-ID-19936698-ADNFCR
