Oprah declares April 30 'No Phone Zone Day'Posted On Thu, April 8, 2010
Oprah Winfrey has joined the ranks of government officials who are fed up with distracted driving. She has declared April 30 "No Phone Zone Day."
Winfrey, along with many of American transportation officials, are banding together to launch a public service announcement campaign to inform the American public about the deadly consequences of distracted driving and to pay respect to its victims.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports almost 6,000 Americans die each year from distracted driving. Research shows that drivers who text take their eyes off the road for an average of 4.6 out of every 6 seconds while texting. Drivers who text are 20 times more likely to get in an accident than drivers who aren't distracted.
During Tuesday's Oprah Winfrey Show, the talk show host said "a call or text isn’t worth taking a life. Let’s put a stop to it now, by joining together on April 30 for national 'No Phone Zone Day', and by making our cars a 'No Phone Zone.'"
The Oprah Winfrey Show will air a live episode on April 30 to promote bringing an end to distracted driving. Harpo Studios, Winfrey's production company, will hold rallies in Atlanta, Boston, Detroit, Los Angeles and Washington, D.C.
