Nine out of ten consumers could be driving safer vehicles

Posted On Tue, December 4, 2012

Many senior consumers aren't driving the safest vehicles for their needs, according to a recent survey by AAA.

The survey information shows that only one in ten senior drivers own vehicles with safety features that correspond with the needs of motorists over the age of 65.

According to AAA, 90 percent of motorists experience driving difficulties after age 65 that can severely decrease their safety on the road. Therefore, it is important for them to operate vehicles that offer safety features to correct those issues.

For example, drivers who suffer from arthritic joint pain in their hands would be better suited to cars with keyless entry and ignition options, as well as larger dashboard controls and buttons. drivers with vision troubles should look for vehicles with large, contrasted displays and auto-dimming mirrors to reduce headlight glare.

If drivers do not opt for a vehicle with advanced safety features in their later years, they may be more apt to get into an accident, which could lead to injury and increased auto insurance rates.
