New York not making progress on healthcare legislation

Posted On Wed, September 28, 2011

With the Affordable Care Act forcing each state to require consumers to have health insurance by 2014, many are trying to become compliant. However, New York's recent attempts have stalled, which could cost them millions of dollars if it isn't straightened out according to New York publication, the Star-Gazette.

The Act allows for allocations of federal grants to the states that comply. But if New York doesn't come up with a plan that involves creating a structure and budget to support the program, as well as helping customers receive the insurance while cutting out fraudulent claims, it could lose millions of dollars, the news source reported.

The state may be able to earn as much as $100 million from the federal government, but it will not get any more than the $39 million it has received alrteady unless it applies for new funding soon.

"States can choose when to apply for grant funding based on their needs and planned expenditures, and states will have multiple opportunities to apply for funding in the years ahead," Keith Maley, a spokesman for the Department of Health and Human Services, told the news source.

If a person is looking for insurance to beat the rush that the Affordable Care Act may create, it is a smart idea to compare quotes before selecting one.
