New Year's one of the most common days for highway deaths

Posted On Wed, January 2, 2013

Traffic officials will have to wait and see to determine if New Year's Day involved a high number of crashes that led to a person's death. Historically, however, it's typically one of the deadliest days on U.S. roads.

According to the 2012 Traffic Safety Culture Index, which was performed by AAA, one of the most common days in which accidents take place is January 1. Much of this is due to the fact that there's a high rate of drinking on New Year's Eve.

Robert Darblenet, president and CEO of AAA, indicates that impaired driving is a top concern in order to diminish the rate of accidents. Many experts are in favor of requiring the use of identified ignition interlock devices for all motorists convicted of driving a car under the influence.

Deborah Hersman, chairman of the NTSB, is also in favor of a more widespread use of these devices.

People who are convicted of impaired driving may see a stark rise to their insurance rates. In fact, some insurers may drop individuals from their plans altogether because they're considered too much of a liability.
