New technology could cut down crash rate

Posted On Wed, February 22, 2012

Consumer Reports recently profiled a new vehicle safety system that could cut down the number of car crashes in the United States significantly.

The system, which is being developed by various universities, automakers and the federal government in tandem, would try to prevent crashes before they occurred, the news source noted. If a person was about to drive into a situation where they would likely be hit, the vehicle would have a warning light and alarm go off, which could make the person come to a quick stop before they actually enter a dangerous area.

"These systems are being aggressively developed because they could be the next big safety breakthrough," said Rik Paul, automotive editor for Consumer Reports. "But adequate oversight of how the information is used is essential to ensure the privacy of drivers and to prevent abuse."

While this technology is not yet available, it is important for consumers to protect themselves from accidents. One of the best ways to do this is to ensure their auto insurance is sufficient. By comparing auto insurance quotes, a person may find a plan that is both affordable and adequate.
