New healthcare law will protect against fraud

Posted On Wed, May 19, 2010

Some Americans may fear changes that the Affordable Care Act will bring about, but the Department of Justice and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services announced that there are protections built into the law that protect taxpayers' money, fight health fraud, and strengthen consumer rights.

Findings from the annual Health Care Fraud and Abuse Control Program Report showed that the federal government has effectively used cutting-edge strategies in order to protect against fraud and brought back billions of dollars for Americans in 2009. Medicare and Medicaid are often targets of health fraud, and the Affordable Care Act is working to fight against it.

HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius said that "the Affordable Care Act gives us new tools to fight fraud, protect consumers, and safeguard taxpayer dollars. It strengthens our ability to stop fraud before it starts by making it harder to submit false claims and easier to catch those who try to cheat out consumers. And, the new law will guarantee that those who try to game the system face severe consequences."

The healthcare reform legislation was passed in March and is expected to be fully implemented by 2014.ADNFCR-2297-ID-19788209-ADNFCR
