New Hampshire hospital to stay in health insurance company's network

Posted On Tue, February 22, 2011

Southern New Hampshire residents concerned that their hospital would no longer take patients covered by a certain health insurance provider can finally rest easy.

According to the Associated Press, Exeter Hospital and Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield reached an agreement on Monday that will allow some 20,000 people to continue seeing their primary care provider at the facility.

The Associated Press reports that the hospital and the insurance giant had been deadlocked in a dispute over reimbursement rates for medical procedures for several months. But apparently, the two sides were able to reach a deal before the 5:30 p.m. deadline.

Had the two sides not been able to reach a deal, Anthem would have dropped Exeter Hospital physicians from their list of in-network providers, forcing patients to either change insurance plans, change hospitals or see their current doctor but pay for treatment out of pocket.

According to the Kaiser Family Foundation, 50.6 million people lack health insurance in the United States, or 17 percent of the population. Of that total, 135,400 are New Hampshire residents. Approximately 10 percent of New Hampshire's population doesn't carry health insurance.
